The Uzès station

The Uzès station, located within the municipality of the same name in the Gard department and the Occitanie region, was once a French railway station operated by the Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean (PLM) railway company. Inaugurated in 1880, it was part of the Le Martinet to Beaucaire line. Unfortunately, the French National Railway Company (SNCF) ended passenger traffic in 1938, marking the end of its railway operations in the area.

History of the Uzès station

The Uzès station was inaugurated in 1880 as part of the development of the railway network in the south of France. Its architecture, typical of the period, combines neoclassical and industrial styles. It served as a departure and arrival point for numerous travelers for decades, facilitating commercial trade and local travel.

Uzès once marked the terminus of a short single-track railway line that branched off from the main right-bank Rhône line at Remoulins station. Although the line was popular with local residents, passenger service was discontinued in 1938. However, the line continued to operate for freight transport until the 1990s, despite preservation efforts by the French national federation of transport users' associations. In 2010, the line was permanently decommissioned.

The original building of the Uzès station, representative of the standard 1880 architecture of the Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean (PLM) railway company, is recognizable by the clock that still adorns its facade. Although decommissioned, the station is now privately owned. The tracks between Uzès and Remoulins remain in place.

The region now offers a picturesque alternative to this former railway line with the Greenway, the longest cycle path in the Gard. Spanning 32 kilometers of cycle-touring routes, the Greenway links Beaucaire to Uzès, passing through iconic sites such as the Pont du Gard and Remoulins. This Occitanie route, consisting mainly of cycle paths, offers cyclists the opportunity to discover a variety of landscapes in the Gard while following the route of the former Le Martinet railway network on the map.

Access and transport to Uzès

Uzès, nestled between Alès and Nîmes and close to the magnificent Cévennes, Beaucaire, and the Pont du Gard, is easily accessible by various means of transport. Although the Uzès station has ceased its railway operations, it remains open to visitors and residents of the region. A car park is available on-site for those arriving by car.

For those coming from outside the city, several transport options are available. Regional bus lines connect with the main bus stations of neighboring towns. The nearest train stations, such as Avignon and Nîmes, both offer TGV services, while Remoulins provides connections for mainline and regional (TER) trains.

Several regular bus lines run through Uzès, connecting the town to Nîmes, Alès, Lussan, Remoulins, and Pouzilhac in the Gard department. In addition, connections to destinations such as Bagnols-sur-Cèze, Pont-Saint-Esprit, and Avignon in neighboring departments are also available. These transport options offer travelers appreciated flexibility for exploring the Occitanie region and its natural wonders, as well as the town of Uzès.
