Uzès station

Uzès station, located in the municipality of Uzès in the Gard department of the Occitanie region, was once a French railway station operated by the Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée (PLM). Inaugurated in 1880, it was part of the Le Martinet to Beaucaire line. Unfortunately, the Société nationale des chemins de fer français (SNCF) discontinued passenger traffic in 1938, marking the end of its railway activity in the country.

History of Uzès station

Uzès station was inaugurated in 1880 as part of the development of the rail network in the south of France. Its architecture, typical of the period, combines elements of neo-classical and industrial styles. For decades, it served as a point of departure and arrival for many travelers, facilitating trade and the movement of the local population.

Uzès was once the terminus of a short, single-track railway line, which branched off from the main line on the right bank of the Rhône at Remoulins station. Although the line proved popular with the local public, passenger service was discontinued in 1938. However, the line continued to operate for freight until the 1990s, despite the preservation efforts of the Fédération nationale des associations d'usagers des transports. In 2010, the line was definitively decommissioned.

The original Uzès station building, representative of the standard architecture of the Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée (PLM) dating from 1880, is recognizable by the clock that still adorns its façade. Although no longer in use, the station is now privately owned. The tracks between Uzès and Remoulins remain in place.

The region now offers a picturesque alternative to this former railroad line with the voie verte, the longest cycle path in the Gard. With its 32 kilometers of cycle tourism, the voie verte links Beaucaire to Uzès, passing through emblematic sites such as the Pont du Gard and Remoulins. This Occitanie route, mainly made up of cycle paths, offers cyclists the chance to discover a variety of Gard landscapes, while following on the map the route of the train networks of the former Martinet railway.

Getting to Uzès

Uzès, nestled between Alès and Nîmes and close to the magnificent Cévennes, Beaucaire and the Pont du Gard, is easily accessible by various means of transport. Although the Uzès train station has ceased rail operations, it remains open to visitors and residents of the region. On-site parking is available for those arriving by car.

For those coming from out of town, several transport options are available. Regional bus routes provide links to the main bus stations in neighboring towns. The nearest stations, such as Avignon and Nîmes, both have TGV services, while Remoulins offers connections for mainline and TER trains.

Various regular bus routes run through Uzès, linking the town with Nîmes, Alès, Lussan, Remoulins and Pouzilhac in the Gard department. Connections to destinations such as Bagnols-sur-Cèze, Pont-Saint-Esprit and Avignon in the surrounding départements are also available. These transport options offer travelers appreciable flexibility to explore the Occitanie region and its natural wonders, as well as the town of Uzès.
