What Time Draws: An Encounter Between the Memory of Places and the Memory of Materials

Book your stay in Uzès!

Boutique Hôtel Entraigues , located at Uzès , is pleased to present, from October 1, 2026, to March 15, 2027, the exhibition “Ce que le temps dessine” (What Time Draws), which brings together two artists with distinct practices but shared concerns: British painter and draftsman Anny Evason and French sculptor Dominique Lonchampt. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.

This exhibition juxtaposes the memory of places and landscapes—explored by Anny Evason—with the memory of materials, objects, and fragments—a theme dear to Dominique Lonchampt. While their artistic approaches differ, they both share a particular focus on the traces that time and human intervention leave in the world.

Dominique Lonchampt: The Memory of Things

In Dominique Lonchampt’s work, materials are never neutral. Stone, wood, iron, lead, ash, paper, or fragments of objects carry within them a history and a memory. The artist collects these elements—often found in his surroundings or discarded—to assemble and transform them, giving them a new life. His artistic process becomes an act of preservation: breathing new life into what has already existed, while preserving the imprint of its past. His works, such as his “Archives,” incorporate fragments of documents, notes, and objects, creating particles of both individual and collective memory.

Anny Evason: The Memory of Places

For Anny Evason, it is the landscape itself that becomes the vessel for this memory. She observes a place—its shapes, its vegetation, its structures, and above all, the traces left by human activity. Her goal is not so much to depict a landscape as to reveal what has happened there and what remains. A building, a path, a fence, or a washhouse thus become clues to a broader history. Drawing on her experience in set design and theater, her perspective dramatizes the landscape, playing on presence, absence, anticipation, and the silent tension of the places. Her works, such as *The Long Wait* (Lavoir series), present landscapes that seem to bear the traces of past or ongoing human activity.

A Dialogue Between Two Practices

Dominique Lonchampt captures the memory of objects and materials, while Anny Evason reveals the memory of places and landscapes. One breathes new life into fragments that might otherwise disappear; the other brings to light, within a landscape, the sometimes subtle traces of what humans have built, transformed, or left behind. For both artists, time is not merely a theme: it is inscribed in the works themselves—in their materials, their traces, their erasures, and their survivals.
