Discreet yet ever-present, this golden-furred feline made his home here a few years ago… and has never since left Uzès — or our hearts.

Affectionate, tranquil, and naturally sociable, Schmutz embodies the spirit of the house better than anyone: the art of living, gentleness, and a love for the present moment. He wanders freely between the inner courtyard, the stone hallways, and the sun-drenched lounges, bringing a familiar warmth to the premises that our guests, young and old, often notice with fondness.

A story of affection and heritage

Its name, Schmutz, means “little kiss” in Alsatian—a nod to Jo Charlot, the founder of the venue, who hails from that region. This four-legged companion very quickly became the establishment’s mascot, serving as a living bridge between our visitors and our history.

He has found much more than a roof here: a true home, a community of passersby who pamper him, observe him, and sometimes photograph him. He also has his routines — always ready at breakfast time, often asleep on a stone step warmed by the sun, sometimes tucked away in a corner of the art gallery. He is part of the scenery, never imposing himself.
